The Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale is part of the astounding body of work from one of the most productive design pairs in golf, Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf. From 1986-94 the pair created some 17 award-winning courses. Each of these courses features breathtaking scenic views integrated into very playable holes. Among these early creations was a project for the Tournament Players Club Network. They were given the project to design the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. This collaboration is no exception, fortunately for the PGA TOUR, it is considered to be an example of some of Morrish and Weiskopf's best work. The Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale: Stadium Course
Laid out in the Sonoran Desert and set against the beautiful McDowell Mountains, this Tournament Players Club offers two 18-hole courses. The primary course is the Stadium Course, which was designed to host a PGA TOUR event and cater to its resort clientele. It features a straightforward and maintainable layout, while providing clear-cut shot values. In addition, the course features a spectator mounding that allows for the near half-million PGA TOUR fans that populate the area for a week during the Phoenix Open.
The Stadium Course at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale offers a rich golfing experience while maintaining the beauty of its desert surroundings. Regional plant life such as Saguaro cacti and mesquite trees accentuate the landscape of this championship course. The 15th hole features one of the largest Palo Verdes trees in Arizona. It measures 42 feet, which is a dozen feet higher than normal. Players of all skill levels will enjoy the challenge offered by this spectacular course.
The Desert Course has earned the distinction of the Valley of the Sun's "Diamond in the Rough." Golfers will find this course to provide a unique experience. Impressive course conditions, breathtaking scenery, expertly crafted fairways and a stringent standard of maintenance all make this Tournament Players Club course a superb value for local residents. Golfers can walk or ride the Desert Course throughout the year at a preferred rate. In addition, the Desert Course is recognized as one of the elite golf clubs in the world by the Audubon Sanctuary Program. That recognition is part of the course's No. 1 ranking in the state for preservation of the natural environment and conservation. In 2001, Mark Calcavecchia set a 72-hole scoring record at the Phoenix Open. The record that had been held by Mike Souchak for 46 years was broken with an amazing 28-under-par 256 total. Calcavecchia also set the record for most birdies in 72 holes at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. He shot 32 birdies over four days to win by eight shots over Rocco Mediate.
For those interested in scoring anywhere in the neighborhood of Calcavecchia's record on the Stadium Course, you'll have to hone your skills on the easier (and more scenic) back nine. Starting at the par-5 15th, the scenery and the golf are of particular interest. The 501 yard par-5 15th features an island green and a strong temptation to reach the green in two. The par-3 16th is particularly famous for Tiger Wood's ace on it during the 1997 Phoenix Open.
The 17th hole on the Stadium Course at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale is a respected short par-4. It was included in Phoenix Magazine's collection of "The Best 18 Holes to Play in Arizona." It is possible to drive the 332 yard hole from the tee, but the danger of water and sand require a skilled shot. Another amazing feat during the 2001 Phoenix Open was performed by Andrew Magee on this hole. He steered clear of the water and sand and recorded the only par-4 double eagle in PGA TOUR history. His tee shot ricocheted off of Tom Byrum's putter to roll 8 feet directly into the cup while Byrum was squatting down to look over his putt.
With a lake stretched along the left and sand on the right, the 438 yard, par-4 18th is quite possibly the most dramatic hole featured at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. While the tee shot presents a challenge, the second shot into the green doesn't let up. It features a deep bunker to the right as well as a slope that protects the left side and front.
