Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale: Course Highlights

In 2001, Mark Calcavecchia set a 72-hole scoring record at the Phoenix Open. The record that had been held by Mike Souchak for 46 years was broken with an amazing 28-under-par 256 total. Calcavecchia also set the record for most birdies in 72 holes at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. He shot 32 birdies over four days to win by eight shots over Rocco Mediate.

For those interested in scoring anywhere in the neighborhood of Calcavecchia's record on the Stadium Course, you'll have to hone your skills on the easier (and more scenic) back nine. Starting at the par-5 15th, the scenery and the golf are of particular interest. The 501 yard par-5 15th features an island green and a strong temptation to reach the green in two. The par-3 16th is particularly famous for Tiger Wood's ace on it during the 1997 Phoenix Open.

The 17th hole on the Stadium Course at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale is a respected short par-4. It was included in Phoenix Magazine's collection of "The Best 18 Holes to Play in Arizona." It is possible to drive the 332 yard hole from the tee, but the danger of water and sand require a skilled shot. Another amazing feat during the 2001 Phoenix Open was performed by Andrew Magee on this hole. He steered clear of the water and sand and recorded the only par-4 double eagle in PGA TOUR history. His tee shot ricocheted off of Tom Byrum's putter to roll 8 feet directly into the cup while Byrum was squatting down to look over his putt.

With a lake stretched along the left and sand on the right, the 438 yard, par-4 18th is quite possibly the most dramatic hole featured at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. While the tee shot presents a challenge, the second shot into the green doesn't let up. It features a deep bunker to the right as well as a slope that protects the left side and front.
